Waiting and waiting and ……

Since I no longer nurse the boys at the same time, there is often quite a long wait for a meal. About a third of the time, I have one nursing baby in my lap and a really fussy baby laying by my side and kicking his brother out of frustration. It is interesting to me that the nursing baby is invariably distracted by the slightest noise or change in atmosphere. But if his brother is kicking him hard and repeatedly on the backside, he won’t flinch.

Another third of the time, the baby in waiting will want to PLAY. So, because it takes every bit of concentration to keep distractible nursing baby focused with toys dangling out of my mouth, strategically placed dancing stuffed animals, movies on the iPhone held right next to the target, and good old pacifier bait and switch tricks, I am left with little else to entertain the baby who wants to play NOW. That is when I am so glad for pregnancy. Because that is where I perfected the art of using my toes!

Yes, like most pregnant women, I became very skilled at picking up objects with my feet when bending over became too precarious. So, to keep waiting baby from screaming and kicking his brother, I have learned to dangle a white burp cloth from my toes over him and let him try to snatch it. I can tickle him with my toes. I can grab toys that are juuuuuust out of reach and toss them in his general direction. When he is bored with those three options, I have learned to toss my hair so that it is a very effective peekaboo cover and that (combined with a huge smile) will keep him entertained for about a minute and fourteen seconds.

The last option for the very wonderful brilliant sweet patient waiting baby is to find a thumb, suck it, and take a little nap. Which is exactly what you have in the photo below. Brody just couldn’t take it, so he passed out in hunger and exhaustion.

I have to admit that I thought this baby was cute before I saw this photograph. But (ok, I know I am totally biased and taking a big risk here is saying this) when I saw this photo, I realized that this kid is gorgeous. I mean, really, really gorgeous. Look at these eyelashes! And those rosy cheeks! And that pouty lip!! OK. I am done gushing. I generally try to restrain myself. But I just couldn’t help it this one time.

And here you have Exhibit C . . . Angel Baby:

Getting and Giving

I always kiss the boys on the cheek after they eat.  And they have just started kissing me back!  Mind you, they open their mouths wide and slobber all over my cheek.  But I don’t mind one bit!  Here is Brody, practicing his technique.
